excessive cough during pregnancy and muscle pain

I am 28 weeks pregnant. I few days ago I became sick and saw my family doctor and was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. The only thing he said he could advise me to take was an over the counter anti-histimene, which is useless. I have asthma also. I've been coughing excessively. Now I feel a pain on the upper right side of my stomach the the left of my right rib. Is all this okay for my baby? Could this pain be a pulled muscle from coughing? What can I do?
