The variations in colour of your vaginal discharge are possible and you shouldn’t worry until it starts to be irritating, as you said.
The white discharge is totally natural and it appears occasionally, during your ovulation, then when you catch a cold or when you take painkillers the vaginal discharge is increased. The darker color could appear just before your period is due, or after it, when the old blood is getting out of your vagina. So, the changes in color show you that something is going on in your body.
But if the discharge starts to be smelly or produced in great amounts, it’s a signal that something’s wrong. It could be some yeast infection or STD which can’t be transmitted only by sexual intercourse but also by direct skin contact.
Whatever it is, you can always consult your gynecologist for further info if you have some doubts!
