Hey All
I discovered these little buggers about 8 months ago. Went to the dermatologist and she confirmed they are fordyce spots and said they are perfectly normal. I asked if there's any studies for cures and she said no because they are perfectly normal. I got a little ticked because how is a widespread condition that affects people's happiness and self esteem normal? Anyway, they didn't bother me too much at first but slowly they started spreading around the upper lip and became more noticeable. I've never been a person with confidence problems and i've tried to keep this from getting to me. About 6 weeks ago, I went to a laser clinic and got a Sciton Laser treatment (400 bucks). This was pretty painful (only the 10 needle injections prior to...which numbed things up). After the procedure my lip looked like i got kicked in the mouth for about 6 days then i was fully healed and 100% free of fordyce. I was pretty ecstatic! However this was only for a week, then most eventually came back and now about 80% are back. However, the doc promised 80% success rate so I called him the other day and I have a follow up in two weeks. Can anyone confirm that accutane does work for fordyce spots? And how hard is it to get a prescription for this as I've read there's lots of possible side effects...Well thanks for listening to my novel, hope someone has something good to add

A few weeks ago I discovered a whole bunch of tiny white spots on the left hand side of my lips, in the corner and on the upper lips at the side. The right hand side was similar but slightly less affected.

Obviously I was freaked out! There was no pain, itching or other discomfort, but they did not look good. I wasn't sure whether they were particularly visible, so I didn't do anything about it for a bit.

But it bugged me, so I did a bit of surfing and wound up here. I think they are fordyce spots. I have always had quite dry skin, and of late have been sleeping in a room in which a serious dehumidifier has been working during the day (to rectify a shower leak..). I noticed that my hands have been very dry of late. I thought this sounds like a fordyce scenario.

The other possible cause was that, about a day or so before the spots appeared, I ate a whole bulb of garlic. (As to why, that's another story; suffice it to say, don't smoke!!). I was wondering whether the allicin in the garlic had been excessive to my system and sprung up through my lips or something.

Anyway, that's a bit of backstory, in case it relates to anyone's else's situation.

Having read the posts on this thread, I went out and bought an array of Blistex products. In the UK the blue pot one has a slightly different name. I opted for the daily lip conditioner (white pot, red writing) and have been applying it liberally for about a week. At night very liberally.

So, is it working? Yes, I think so. The spots are definitely less prominent to fading away. It's too early to be doing the conga, but it's looking ok and I am quietly confident that if I persist they will disappear.

The downside is that the sides of my mouth are currently very red. Maybe I could have avoided that with more precise application. It's a pain to apply the balm to where my spots are, which is fairly inside-ish. But it's ok. I just hope the lip conditioner is not toxic to ingest, because there has been a bit of ingestion!!

Summary: the daily lip conditioner gets a provisional thumbs-up from me. Hopefully in another week or so those spots will really be close to fully gone. And I will be very happy. Though it might take a few more days for the mouth to recover from all the balm..

Cheers.

I am a 37 yr old male and have them all over my top lip and now a blob of them the size of a pencil eraser on my lower lip - center of my lip like a bullseye. They started about 3 years ago. I've gone to 3 oral surgeons/dermatologists and all say there's nothing that can be done. No laser, no cream, nothing. I've tried poking them with needles, cutting my skin, and I've tried this Blistex - nothing works. The Blistex hasn't done a thing for me. I bascially have withdrawn from family and friends and hide my mouth when I speak at work.

I started getting spots on my lips in 2003. I am a barber, and it is very embarassing. When I talk to people, their focus is on my lips during the conversation. Some are too intimidated to look at my lips, but when they get a stare, they stare hard. I have tried peroxide, only made lips turn white. Tried alcohol, only made lips look wrinkled. Used mouthwash with a Q-tip, and it did work, but for couple of weeks. Found this out when gargling extra long one day, and my lips started looking normal afterwards. I thought I found the cure but was wrong. Stumbled upon L-Lysine lip balm, and started taking the pills. Worked for couple of months, then it stopped working, but is better than what it was before. Went to a Dermatologists, he said I would have to live with it. He had a nice sized spot on his lip too. I am outgoing, energetic but the fordyce is holding me back. I use L-lysine lip balm, it works until wears off. I have a spot on bottom lip, and a cluster on top lip on the side. Now I know how women with big breast feel...when the focus during conversation is on my body part, and not on me!!! I will give anything to have my life back. Thought it came from my pet ball python when he bit me after eating an infected rat. Rat was sickly, but I paid it no mind while feeding him. My wifes family will always look at me like somethings not right with me...SOMEONE...PLEASE FIND A CURE!!!!!!

I know exactly how you feel, man.......same with me. I posted above about Blistex not working and my DRs have said I just have to live with it.

Same with me - outgoing, lots of friends, family - and now I've stopped as much socialzing since everyone just stares, or covers or picks at their lips as they talk to me. I've even come out to a few and said I have a scar/skin condition and that makes me uncomfortable. They say 'oh I never noticed'.....and then keep doing it.
