hammertoe and bunion surgery and swelling

I had hammertoe repair and bunionecomty four weeks ago and have severe swelling. (I am one week out of my boot) I am a 54 female and my doctor called it a moderately severe case. I decided to do the surgery now before it worsened. But I am wondering how long I can expect this swelling (and related pain) to continue. When I saw the doc yesterday I think he was surprised at how swollen I am. He wrapped it in an ace bandage. I promised less walking. But I am starting to get concerned. I have a big overseas trip planned for mid-June. Anybody out there have a similar experience?
