Hi, I would like to know something about high bilirubin. For the last few years I have occasional problems with vomiting. Every time I am feeling sick the jaundice is present. My skin and eyes become yellow. After a test I have found out that my bilirubin level in blood is high. Can you tell me what can cause this?
High bilirubin can be caused by some liver diseases when the liver is incapable to remove bilirubin from the blood, or when too much red blood cells are being premature destroyed (this condition is called haemolysis). Also you may suffer from Gilbert's disease which is congenital disease with abnormalities in the removal of bilirubin. The blockage of liver or bile duct by gallstones, hepatitis, long term alcohol abuse or trauma also can cause the elevated bilirubin.
