how effective is methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis?

Hi, my father is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for very long time. He is 62 years old and his condition became worse in last several months. When he visited doctor several days ago he prescribed him methotrexate. I would like to know something more about this medication and how effective is it for rheumatoid arthritis?

Hi, my friend is also using methotrexate and he feels pretty good since he started to use this medication. However his doctor told him that methotrexate is very strong medication which has to be taken with precaution because of its side affects. It is medication which is also used in treating some cancers especially leukemia. He is very effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis but also can't be used too long.
