Hello! My husband has had problems with his sleep apnea since our wedding. At first his problems were not so severe; he was only snoring a lot and used to wake up several times during the night. But, as the time passed his problems became more and more difficult. He had problems with his high blood pressure and his doctor said his apnea was one of the causes. Since he couldn't tolerate CPAP device his doctor suggested surgery. I would like to know how long it takes to recover from obstructive sleep apnea surgery.

Hello! There are many persons who suffer from sleep apnea and since this is a progressive disease which, if untreated, gets worse during the time. It is difficult to say how long it takes to recover from the sleep apnea surgery since you haven't specified which surgical option your doctor suggested. There are many different surgical options and the time of recovering depends on the severity of the procedure. Patients are usually discharged from the hospital in two to five days after the surgery and if your husband does septoplasty he will need 5 to 7 days to go back to everyday activities. If his doctor decided to do pharyngoplasty tonsillectomy he will recover in 10 to 14 days. If he is going to do maxillomandibular advancement, which is the most invasive surgical procedure he will be restricted to a liquid diet for three to four weeks. The return to the normal activities and diet may take up to six months.
