My father in law passed away November 2007 from 10 years of heavy drinking even though we tried to help him quit. He was also a heavy smoker. He finally passed from end-stage cirrhosis of the liver and heart failure from the heavy drinking. Please think of everyone your drinking affects. It is not a disease that one person goes through, it is a disease that effects the entire family. Think of everyone it's hurting and do it for THEM.

I know it is not easy to go through withdrawal, I was hit by a truck in May 2007 and am JUST coming off of OxyContin, I'm 10 days clean, still feeling the withdrawal, and I know what you're feeling. It is not pleasant, but it is for the good of everyone, not just yourself.

Please, if you just want someone to complain to during your recovery, please email me at lassia@telusplanet.net and maybe talking through it might help you.

After 18 years of getting drunk daily, I finally knew I had to quit. My family was ready to leave me. I went for an assessment and they wanted to put me in inpatient for 30 days. I didn't agree to that. I missed 1 week of work and stayed at home with tremors, vomiting and basically trying to get clean. After about 10 days I was physically clean, but not mentally. I went to a few AA meetings, and they helped. I stopped going because I noticed that alot of members made AA their whole life, almost like they were addicted to AA. I didn't want that to happen to me. I have been sober for 16 years.

9 days sober now, still feel really strange, can't sleep at nights, feel depressed, dizzy, slightly nauseous at times, loss of appetite, weak. I started eating vitamins and lots of fruit and fish and exercise every day to try to help my body along, don't know how bad I would have felt without doing these things. Haven't told my family that I have drinking problems.

Hope you're doing better now. I'm on day 7, though I've had a few beers each day to cope. I was drinking tequila almost everyday for at least two years, so I was hoping the beer would be like the patch. I'm cutting that back as well, though.

I came here looking to see if my symptoms were from withdrawal, and it appears they are. I'm incredibly anxious, depressed, nauseous, achy, etc. And it didn't get this bad until about day 5.

My family doesn't know either. I don't have insurance, so I'm here looking for ways to cope with the continued withdrawal. This is scary, but I have to stay on course.

I have been drinking heavily off and on for the last 20 years. I have quit for months at time in the past with no major or severe withdrawal symptoms. The most recent attempt was a year ago for about 6 weeks with no problems. Is my past a good sign for no major withdrawal problems this time around?

Laughing

I admire and congratulate those posting their commentaries on this forum. Alcoholism is an abundant illness spread throughout the United States. Individuals like us who decide to share their personal experiences about withdrawals help not only others but encourage as well. I believe by doing this individuals with such a problem can have an idea what they will face and be hopeful it will subdue. Iam a recoveree myself and the only way I quit was to admit drinking alcohol made me feel certain emotions more frequent/harder than when sober. The crosses we carry all vary and we must remain strong to change. Embrace the new and you will see day by day diffrences in your current lifestyle. Also, it is not wrong to seek professional help if necessary. Sometimes this helps other, times we are better of doing it ourselves. Just remember dont loose track and hope, you are unique, you are blessed with strengths/weaknesses. You are part of life and this is what life is surviving, enduring, and moving forward! Sincerely, Jesus Hernandez Jr

PostPosted: 07/16/08 - 16:03    Post subject: Headache from alcohol withdrawal? Vote now! Reply with quote

Have been a regular (2-3), but not real heavy (4 max), drinker for awhile and decided last Tuesday to stay completely away for awhile. Probably a good idea since I have counted each day and thought about enjoying a beer at least every other. Must have been more dependant than I thought!

This is day 9 alcohol-free and for the last 3 days I've had the worst killer headache - wakes me up at night, nothing relieves it. Is this from alcohol withdrawal? I'm female, and this is similar, but far worse, than monthly hormonal headaches -- but it's nowhere near that time of the month (those headaches usually come the last day or two and are easily kept in check by taking several feverfew capsules on those days).

If this is from withdrawal, how long will it last? Accupuncture appointment tomorrow, but don't really have the $$ if nothing will help. Thanks!

Have been a pretty heavy drinker for about 10 years and now i was up to drinking probably 15 beers a day. Have just cut back to about 6 the last couple days. Lied awake last night feeling horrible and sweating. Does any one know if it is possible to quit gradually, and if so, does it make the withdraw easier. I am ready to do this and really want to do it on my own. Any good advice is appreciated.

I'm more of an answer-seeker than answer-giver, but for what it's worth, the constant, killer headache was somewhat better than Day 5-9. Still hurts, but not as severe, cancelled the accupuncture appointment today. Not really doing anything special, other than drinking a lot of water. Slept last night thanks to an Ambien CR, but plan to avoid them as a rule. Don't need to trade one habit for another Wink

I quit alcohol on last saturday (July 13, 2008). After 9 days, I am feeling O.K. but evenings especially after physical work remind me of taking alcohol. I usually respond with lot of water and it seems to work.

During day 3-7, I had heavy eye lashes which I thought was due to sinus but it would be lack of alcohol. I was tired. Today, on9th day, I had very deep sleep and had to struggle to get up in the morning. Right now, I felt so hungry that I had almost twice as food and I now feeling like sleeping since evening.

Will return tomorrow or in couple of days.

BTW, I have been drinking 2-3 times/week until 2 years ago and for last 2 years it went up. Last 6 months, every night 2-3 beers followed by around 200 to 250ml of Hark drinks.....
