| I too k Depo from 1999 - 2006 on my G.P's advice that it was perfectly 'safe' and had no side effects other than no periods. In September '06 after reading online risks I demanded a bone density scan and to my horror Depo has caused Osteoporosis. I am 30 yrs old!! My skeleton is equalto that of a 70 yr old woman thanks to Depo. I had no period for 7 yrs, my oestrogen levels are now exremelet low and indicate I've gone through early menopause, my G.P refuses to test for this at this stage. I also had 4 stone weight gain - wich I have now lost with extreme dedication, mood swings, blurred vision, chronic abdominal pain, lack of lubrication , exhaustion and more. The G.P never informed me these were side effects so I continued with the Depo unaware it was the cause for 7 yrs. Only on a friends advice end 2006 I Googled Depo side effects and read and read, what I found was shocking. To all you women out there on this crazy drug, look up the side effects, go to the manufactureres website - pfizer.com, GET a copy of the patent info sheet, this is no good for you. I've been off it 4 months and no period yet. |

So I was on depo for 2 shots (6 months), I spoke to my doctor the other day and told her I am not going back on this ever again, I gained about 20lbs in 6 months (talk about depressing ) she told me that I would not see any weight loss until my body started to have a period again, I heard some people say that once they started their period the weight just fell off, man I hope this is true! If anyone know any more information could ***
THANKS!

Well the depo provera was the only way to stop me ovulating. I had an endometrioma inside my ovary which bled everytime I had my cycle and caused intense pain, I could not have the growth lasered away because it might have damaged my ovary (I lost my other to ovarian cancer) and made me infertile.
The depo has been a live saver for me. I would be in chronic pain every month without fail and bleeding heavily. Even the pill didn't work to regulate my cycle and I tried several different ones.
All medicines have side effects, they have to be used carefully and in conjunction with a lifestyle where you eat as heathily as possible. Yes I've been on the depo 2 years and gained weight, but it is nothing significant and in fact people say I look healthier now than I ever did. |

i started depo a year ago. my obgyn told me it was the only thing to help my endometreosis. at that time, i was getting sick all the time and the obgyn thought the endo was eating at my immune system. i can't take estrogen - it makes me sick - and so she recommended the shot. she said it might cause weight gain and it might make me depressed.
it did keep me from getting sick - i felt better and my periods were heavenly compared to what they were like before - long, painful, disgusting. but it did screw with my emotions a bit - i was always sad - and i started putting on weight. in the past year, i've gained forty pounds. i eat well and exercise every day but i was always, always hungry and suddenly, none of my clothes fit. the weight gain made me even more sad and depressed. i went to my gp and he said that it's not like you gain weight when you start taking it and that's it - the longer you are on the shot, the more weight you gain.
i've stopped taking the shot and i'm not sure what that is going to do to my period and the endo but i'm really upset that my body is now so much bigger and i can't lose it no matter how i try. i feel like i've screwed my body up with depo. it did miracles to my period but it's caused a real image disorder... i'm stuck in this place where i hate myself because i'm big and so, i expect everyone else does too. i know it sounds superficial but the shot has really screwed with my head as much as my body. |

| I have been on Depo for 7 years now and when I started I was 160 or 170 in october of 2006 I did some research on the B-12 shot and diet and found out that Depo neglects you of the B12 and B6 vitamins that is why you always feel drained all the time. Well I started the B12 shot diet and I was 235 when I started and right now I'm 165 still have 30 lbs to lose till my goal but atleast I'm back down to a normal size. If you can't lose it any other way do the diet and do the research before doing anything. I am fixing to go through a procedure to fix me permanatley with out surgery called Esther procedure. It is going to be so nice not to have Depo anymore. |

| I started depo after i gave birth to my first child. I wanted to be lazy and didnt want to have to take a pill every morning. i weighed about 160 ILbs bEfore pregnancy and i weighed 212 after and i was 5'1. so yeah i already had some work to do in the weight department. I was told by my doctor that i would only gain 10 ilbs max. she was way wrong!!! yeah i gained 10 lbs. 10lbs a month! I was on it for 6 months, and after i recieved my last shot, they decided to tell me i had an adverse reaction to the medication. i was told that i had 3 mo. until i needed to think about another form of birth control. well, i got pregnant 1 1/2 months after my last shot. here i am 267 lbs struggling to lose the weight....help |

| I used DP for about 2 years and gained around 2.5 stone - horrible! I did lose it but only after being very careful what I ate and being disciplined (horrible, horrible) for over a year and a half - it involved a lot of soup, veg, no butter etc. I have kept the weight off - until I made the stupid mistake of trying DP again (for various reasons I can't use other methods and my husband and I wanted to wait a little before starting a family) As soon as I realised I was gaining weight again, I stopped the injection (after 3 shots) and am wondering if I can possibly lose the weight again until my periods start - ie, the drug has gone from my system. Think really carefully, everyone, before using this drug! |

Hello to everyone who has been on DEPO PROVERA or is thinking about going on it.
I am 32 years old and I too went on DEPO 4/5 years ago. Let me start by saying that all that you hear from doctor's is BS about the fact that the only reason why you gain weight from birthcontrol is because it increases your appetite therefore we eat more causing us to gain weight. That is F-ing BS. I have several close friends who used depo and are HARD CORE atheletes. When they started noticing the weight gain they worked even harder to keep the weight off with NO LUCK AT ALL!
So do you really believe what the doctors are saying? HELL NO...it is ONE HUGE cover up...we are the GINI PIGS and their excuse is well you are munching to much....F*** Y** DEPO! I have been off DP for 4 years. My periods are back...BUT my bones are like MUSH...I have worked out for 2 years straight now doing 4 days a week with weight training, 4-5 days a week of cardio...minimum of a mile run each time and more. Bike rides and hiking you name it. I eat amazingly well...and barely drink alcohol or sweets. I eat good healthy proteins..I once every blue moon each butter/margarine..now I mainly use olive oil and I eat a well balanced diet! I have tried about 50 diets none have worked...we ALL know that losing weight means you have to get off your ASS and workout and eat well and do this on a regular basis.
Some of friends have said well maybe your not meant to be small....right....that's why only 4 years ago...I was 132 LBS and now I am 207.2 LBS....DEPO from the PIT OF HELL. We all need to fight this...and find a way to get this SHIT out of our bodies once and for all. PLEASE ...I am begging you....DO NOT GO ON DEPO PROVERA! I wish I read all these messages when I was deciding if I should go on it or not!
I won't give up though...and you shouldn't either...keep fighting it...I finally went to the doctor and got tested for Insuline Levels, Glucose, Estrogen, Hypo Thyroid, A1 Diabetis test (which test you over 3 mths not 1 day of your sugar levels, this will test to see if you are Type 1 or 2 Diabetis) Also my iron, pregnancy test and many more....I AM NOT PREGNANT...and all TESTS came back noraml...so you tell me what is it? DEPO of course...and the doctors are LIERS!!!!!! I use to be small and healthy...and I have worked my body so hard over the past 4 years...my knees are bad from having to run so much for cardio....I am spent everytime I do weight training....what else is there? I will NOT accept that I will never lose weight again....
AS you can tell I am ROYALLY pissed off at this. Women are treated like shit in the medical world..and it's high time we kick some ass about this HORRIFYING situation!
PEACE |
