Today was quite a relief for me. I have been with my boyfriend for 6 years and he is my only sexual partner. And in the 6 years we have been together i could probably count the amount of times we've had sex on both hands. The reason for this is that EVERY time it was painful and everything we tried was useless. I became disheartened and avoided sex at all cost, putting a strain on our relationship. But lucky me, he is as supportive as can be and understands. After countless GP visits & pap smears all i got was "try and relax a little" and "have yo tried lubrication?". So I asked THEM for a referral to a Gyn and today, with one quick examination she diagnosed me. I have something along to lines of "excess hymenal remnant", where a clean break hasn't been made and all the hymen is sticking around inflicting pain. She was pretty sure that would have been causing my 6 years of agonizing intercourse. I am now booking myself in for a hymenectomy and i am over the moon. I just cannot believe that this has so clearly been the problem for so long and now something is being done. Fingers crossed it helps, and that our relationship is not too far gone for intimacy. Just some advice to others, please see a gynecologist and push your GP for a referral. Because my problem was "staring them right in the face" and they couldn't even see it. Good luck to all, it's glad to know we're not alone.

i just had a minor hymenectomy procedure done about an hour ago. My bf and i have been having sex for a little over a year (im 21) and the last six months it has been so painful that i am in tears any time we do. It is almost impossible for him to enter me and it kills when we try. Ive gone to pp a few times to see if it was a yeast infection or something along those lines and everytime they say just use lube (we already do). I went to the gyno today and was told that my hymen ring just isnt streatching like it should. The were able to take care of it right then and there. Luckily i only had to have one side done. The injected me with lidocane and then cut me and stitched it up. I didnt even know that they had started cutting until he started to stitch. it took him probably 20 min. Now that the lidocane is wearing off it is a bit painful but not too bad. Hopefully this will solve the problem. He did say to continue to streach it on my own and schedules a follow up for 2 weeks. Nice and easy.

I had a hymanectomy after I finally went to my Gp frustrated and upset through years of trying to insert tampons and have sex with my very understanding boyfriend. There are various operations depending on the severity of your condition and unfortunately for me, mine was the top end of the scale.

After a useless attempt at an examination I was referred to a specialist who explained that my vaginal opening was actually a few millimetres, which explained the many failed attempts! had previously had a blockage when i was 15 and what had happened is that I didn't have an opening but did have periods although there was nowhere for the bleeding to go due to my very thick hymen, but eventually the blockage built up enough to burst through, which then created the few millimetres opening.

I then had to have an operation and after a week of recovery, more due to the general discomfort than any unbearable pain (I sit at a desk all day), I was back to the consultant to start me off on dilators. There are a lot of websites explaining what they are but in short, they are various sized dilators that are inserted into the vagina to stretch it and you progress through the different sizes until you are able to have sex.

I am still using these as i did stop for a while due to moving in with my boyfriends parents before moving in to our own place, so I am not yet a success story, but I'm persevering and I did previoulsy see an improvement in being able to progress to bigger dilators.

if anyone is having trouble inserting tampons or having sex then please get checked out straight away, you may need further treatment. I do regret not going to the GP earlier but I was so embarassed and upset over the situation i just wanted to avoid it. the general advice is that it takes up to 3 months to see an improvement post-op and from using the dilators and it is difficult to stick to it and not give up as you need to use them daily, but hopefully I will get there in the end.

If anyone is going through this, you are not alone, thousands of women suffer from this and do not think you are a failure, you just need some help in getting there.
