Hello. I'm 29 year old mother and I'm pretty worried about my little girl health. She is only 7 year old and just recently she has developed some fungal genital infection. The infection wasn’t anything serious and some antifungal medications should help her, as my doctor said. But, on some regular examination, doctor determined that she has some problems with her hymenal septum.
She suffers from some rare condition called imperforate hymen and doctor told me that he must do some testing and that she could end up on having an operation! I'm very worried about all this and I would like to get some information about this condition!

Hello. I know some facts about this because my sister has been diagnosed with it few years back. You see, an imperforate hymen is a thin membrane that completely covers the opening to a young girl's or young woman's vagina. This does not represent a big problem while your daughter is young but it could represent a big problem when your daughter starts having menstrual bleeding. Menstrual blood cannot flow out of the vagina and this usually causes the blood to back up into the vagina and the abdomen resulting in abdominal or back pain.
This could be very dangerous condition and it should be surgically corrected. The operation is very simple and short- a Y- or X-shaped incision is made in the hymen and healing is usually uncomplicated.
There so, you really don’t have any reasons to be worry. You are lucky you have discovered this, while she’s still young.
