I have read case where one mad got gangrene of his leg because of leprosy. He had to have it amputated, which sacred me to the death. I want to hear more about leprosy, and is it really so dangerous infection. Is there any help for patients and their families in this case, where they could find help and treatment? How does it affect person’s social life if that is such a terrible disease?

There is one treatment available for leprosy, free of charge and provides a simple yet highly effective cure for all types of leprosy. Information campaigns about leprosy in high-risk areas are crucial so that patients and their families are encouraged to come forward and receive treatment. Today, diagnosis and treatment of leprosy is much easier then it used to be. Essential work is being carried out to integrate leprosy services into general health services. This is especially important for communities at risk for leprosy, which are often the poorest communities on the world. Leprosy in all ages has been considered one of the more despicable diseases. Victims have been despised throughout history and kept in separate places called leper colonies, or sanitariums. Even today, most people with leprosy are shunned by their neighbors. In the medieval period, leper colonies sprung up where victims of this disease, which was untreatable in these days, would go to die slowly from the illness.

| Leprosy is not very contagious; approximately 95% of people have natural immunity to the disease. People with leprosy who are treated with medication do not need to be isolated from society. (Historically, people with leprosy were sent to "lepers' colonies" on remote islands or in special hospitals.) |
