Hello! The longer I abstain, the faster I get drunk when I do take a drink. When I drink everyday, I find it takes more alcohol to get drunk. What is the reason.

In alcoholics, alcohol tolerance is connected with activity of alcohol dehydrogenases (a group of enzymes responsible for the breakdown of alcohol) in the liver, and in the bloodstream. High level of alcohol dehydrogenase activity results in fast metabolism of ethanol.

I would guess that when you drink a lot and frequently, your system produces more alcohol dehydrogenase which rapidly breaks down the alcohol, requiring you to drink more alcohol to get or stay drunk.

When you abstain for some time, you body cleans itself, so to speak, and doesn't make the enzyme is sufficient quantity to break down the alcohol rapidly. Consequently you get drunk faster on less alcohol.
