My father is long-term patient with lupus. In last few months, his kidney does not work properly and he experienced swelling, discomfort during urination, his laboratory test is catastrophic. What is going on? Is it the result of SLE? In which extend it can affect on his health? Is there any treatment? Transplantation?
One-half of all patients with lupus have lupus nephritis or lupus related kidney disease. The reason is that antibodies are directed against our own kidney tissue and they can deposit in certain areas of the kidney. The result of that deposition is inflammation, which can lead to complete kidney failure. It is commonly treated with corticosteroids, cytotoxic or immunosuppressive drugs. Only in case of complete kidney failure, transplantation is necessary.
