I had a c-spine anterior diskectomy with fusion on for a herniated disk. I noticed afterwards that my right side of my mouth did not move as well as the left. I talked out of the left side of my mouth and my smile looked crooked. I also have sensation like pins and needless in there area. Three months later my neurosurgeon referred me to a maxillofacial surgeon. I was told that the mandibular nerve was injured during surgery. Medications have helped little, but still have problem. It’s been almost a year; can I expect a full recovery one day?
The mandibular nerve is facial nerve which controls the muscle of the face. There is a time window which the majority of recovery takes place. It is probably that most of the recovery that can take place has already occurred, and that you will always have some residual weakness since this happened a year ago. I think that physical therapy can help you. “Pins and needless” are common sensation when nerve is injured.
