There's a lot of confusion about human growth hormone (HGH, all capital letters), hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin, the "h" in human in small letters), and homeopathic hCG, which would be a very, very, very dilute solution of synthetic hCG or natural hCG (which is harvested from the urine of pregnant women) dropped onto a sugar pill.

Human growth hormone, HGH, protects muscles from being broken down when you are fasting (among many other functions in the human body). It unquestionably encourages burning fat and growing muscle. You can get injections of synthetic HGH, the same product used in treating growth deficiency diseases, for $600 to $2500 a month. Insurance doesn't cover it when it's used for age reversal or fat loss.

Human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, is the hormone the placenta makes after the fertilized egg implants itself in the lining of the uterus. It's the hormone you test for when you use a pregnancy test strip. It interacts with a receptor in the ovary and encourages the production of the hormone progesterone by the corpus luteum. This stimulates growth of the placenta as the embryo and fetus grow.

About 80 years ago, a British researcher named Albert T. W. Simeons, who had been studying pregnant women in India, theorized that since a pregnant woman's body shunts nutrients to her unborn even when she is herself undernourished, hCG would send nutrients to vital organs when people went on starvation diets.  He also observed that giving hCG (the real thing, not the homeopathic preparation) to boys who had a condition known as adiposogenital dystrophy, in which fatty tissue grows and the genitals shrink, lost fat and gained muscle when given hCG. He reasoned from those observations that a very low-calorie diet (500 calories a day) with a small amount (125 IU) of hCG injected very day should melt away fat without risking muscle.

In the 1950's, Dr. Simeon became quite famous for his clinic in Rome. However, no one else was ever able to duplicate his results. Moreover, the real hormone is relatively expensive, about $1000 a month when it is used for fertility treatments, and some users have suffered tragic complications, such as stroke.

To get around the cost of hCG, some bariatric physicians started offering homeopathic hCG. There are several problems with this approach. One is that homeopathy simply doesn't work that way. The objective in homeopathy is to provide the body with a tiny taste of the reaction it needs to avoid so it will figure out how to deal with a stress on its own. In homeopathic theory, you should more likely get homeopathic lard to lose weight (actually, it's a bit more detailed than that) than hCG.

Homeopathic hCG doesn't work for weight loss, but if you take homeopathic hCG and somehow manage to stay on your 500-calorie a day diet (and I am not going to tell you can't), you will indeed lose weight. However, it's the dieting, not the homeopathic product.

And it's really HGH your body needs, not hCG. Fortunately there are ways to get your body to make more HGH without taking either the synthetic hormone or some homeopathic product:

  • Take a break from eating a couple of times a week. Your pituitary gland will start making HGH when you have been fasting for about 17 hours to protect your muscles from being broken down for their amino acids. It will continue making HGH for about 48 hours altogether, at which point your muscles really will begin to break down. The HGH helps you burn fat and build muscle. However, fasting does not mean "eating less." It means eating nothing at all. It's OK to consume water and electrolytes, but no protein, carbohydrate, or fat. Of course, if you use insulin, you will have to adjust your schedule to fast, after your doctor approves.
  • Get eight hours of sleep every night. Your body makes HGH when you sleep.
  • Have more sex. Your body makes this weight-loss hormone when you are sexually active.

Don't spend a fortune on the wrong hormone. Do your best to get your body to make more HGH naturally, without any products at all.
