I dont sit at home and eat all day I am pretty active I even started running every morning and watching what I eat. Nothing helped my weitght kept going up. I told my doctor after about 5 months and he told me that weight gain is not a side effect. Yea right so I plan on getting this out sometime this week b/c It is cause me so much trouble, I love the worry free stuff but I dont like all this extra baggae I put on.

Thank you sooooo much for everyone posting on here!! I really thought I was going nuts!! Had my iud put in in January '08 and have gained 10-15 lbs since then. In August of 2006 I weighed my heaviest at 176 and worked my butt off to lose it. By July of last year I was at 140 and feeling great!! Even after the holidays I was 142. Now, since my Mirena, I'm 153 and feeling so bloated ALL the time!! My boobs have never felt so painful, even when I was pregnant. My moods have been all over the place, and my PMS stage seems to last for 2 weeks before I start spotting at all. Yes, great birth control, and love the no to light periods....but I run 2-4 miles a day and eat like a mouse!!! I'm so thankful for so many of you understanding what I'm going through!! I couldn't believe it when I found this site on Google. I'm going to call my Dr. tomorrow and see what it costs to have it removed. I worked way too hard to have this thing blow the body I had last summer!!

I had the Mirena inserted on 19 March 08. Since then my weight gain has been ridiculous. I have put on about 10lb, which I cannot attribute to my eating habits or lifestyle. I eat healthily and exercise several times a week. The weight gain has been mostly on my stomach, hips and breasts and I have grown out of all my clothes. I feel bloated & miserable, not to mention despair. With the moods/pms, at least with regular periods you could tell where you were in the cycle. No I have no idea from one day to the next and really don't feel like I am in touch with what my body is doing. I have so loved not having periods the last month or so but I am concerned about the long term effects of the IUD. If this is just the start what other side effects will I get further down the track? I had it fitted because I was absolutely desperate to have some relief from extremely heavy periods and bad pmt but it is so not worth it for all the weight gain. My gp did not warn me about any of the side effects. So glad I found this site! I have now read enough to know it is not for me. I have made an appointment to have it removed on Monday. Back to square one.

I have had Mirena for about 9 months now. I told my doctor that I was very sensitive to birth control products and only use the low hormone pills. He told me Mirena had very few side effects and was safe for nursing mothers. I started about three months after my daughter was born and within four weeks my milk had completely dried up. I then regained all of the weight that I had lost plus a few extra pounds. I have worked with a personal trainer and a nutritionist since then and I work out for at least one hour a day 6 days a week. I decided to give myself 6 months to adjust to the hormones but have had no luck. I am currently just a heavy as the day after I had my baby and, like you all, it is almost all in my stomach, thighs, and breasts. I have decided to have the IUD removed next month. I havn't had a period in a year and it is really nice not to have to worry about getting pregnant again quite yet, but I cannot deal with the extra weight, mood swings, and acne. I am glad to see that I am not crazy and other people have had similar experiences. Mirena is obviously very effective, but I feel that the side effects have not been adequatley researched because there seem to be a lot of us out there but nothing is listed by the manufacturer.

Im really worried now. Iv been having gyni probs for the last five years. The doctor put me on the pill to regulate my hormones. Now iv hit 40 she wont let me take it anymore. I need the pill for contriceptive too now. She has said for me to have the mirene, it will solve both issues.
Iv noticed iv put on weight already an have put it down to the hormone probs i have.
So to have the mirene i feel very worried my weight will increase more.
I will have to have some sort of hormone replacement, but not sure what to do now.
Has anyone got any advice
I have polysistic ovaries an fibroids on my womb. This makes my hormone levels low.
Thanks

I wish I can have it removed too but I was charged $1,000 for it...I haven't heard anybody being charged so much.

I am absolutely appauled AND relieved after reading your stories. I have had the IUD since my second child (30th b-day) and gained 30 lbs. in three months without changing any of my eating or exercise habits. I never thought about the IUD until now--I just though--geez the moment I turn 30 I ballooned up. Then I had that IUD out to have a 3rd child--got pregnant right away and didn't gain much with the pregnancy (but was still holding onto the 30lbs) then got a 2nd IUD after she was born--and gained 20 more. Now we are at 50 lbs!!! I have been completely depressed about my weight gain and living in a body I didn't recognize. It interfered with my marriage, I was moody and had no sex-drive (like another person on here--my husband and i even separated for a while but are back together). My 2nd one expired and I had a new one put in in May (again not making the connection). I have done everything from fasting, Atkins, running, raw foods, vegetarianism---and I might lose a pound or two but not sustainable. My metabolism seems to have completely shut down. I eat no sugar, no bread--I live on fish and veges and I am a solid 170--down from 183. It takes intensive exercise and no deviation from my diet to maintain this weight and my normal weight (which I was after two kids) is 135. Today I goggled mirena and weight gain just on a whim after speaking with a friend who also gained weight quickly and the only commonality we could come up with is that we both have the mirena. Thank you for posting. I am calling the doctor to get this thing out of me so I can get my body and my life back.

I agree with most people on here. I was told by my Dr that the Mirena would not cause weight gain, but here I am 13 lbs heavier in just a year. And that is watching every single I put in my mouth! I have always been the type person that could eat whatever I wanted and now I am gaining weight just looking at food. I got it April 07 and had it removed yesterday. I was 118 and now 131lbs. Already though I feel better, I started my period as soon as I got home and my breasts aren't nearly as tender. I am hoping I drop the extra pounds. Not that i think I am fat, but none of my clothes are fitting at all! It's discouraging to wake up and have to search and search for something to wear that your not hanging out in all areas...muffin top city. I had the swollen stomach but already that is going down. I was thinking of the copper IUD but I am reading horror stories about weight gain with it too.. supposedly its the inflammatory response with these IUD's not so much the hormones or lack thereof. I'm now thinking just condoms or a diaphram, something not implanted and non hormonal. Best of luck to everyone, ultimately this board helped me to make the decision to have the Mirena removed and I am so glad I did.

I also suffered very bad side effects using mirena,I got it out as soon as i found it was causing my problems, weight, cysts, facial hair, sinus, bloated stomach.
MIRENA is EVIL ,it ruins lives and should be banned.

I read other womens side effect stories, it helps to read stories from other women..

Mine cost around $1100 total, $600 for the device itself and $500 for the insertion. Luckily insurance covered all but $20. No matter, I'm having it taken out anyway. I had it put in Sept 07, and soon after I started gaining weight back after having lost most of my baby weight from July 2007. I've gained about 15lbs so far. I also began to have extremely oily skin, when I used to have skin so dry I couldn't wash my hair but every 2-3 days, now I have to wash it daily and that doesn't even seem like enough sometimes. I have been breaking out more than when I was a teenager. And my belly just keeps getting bigger & bigger from the bloating. And sex drive, forget it! I thought it was just me, but after finding this forum and another at http://www.aippg.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24435&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
I realize, it's NOT me - what a relief!!
