mirena strings geting in the way

I am a 21 year old first time mother. 8 weeks after giving birth to my now 3 month old baby girl I had mirena put in place by my doctor. Mirena seems to work great, the only thing is that the strings are too long. I have been back to my doctor's office to have them trimmed twice since having it put in place, and my husband is still able to feel the strings during intercourse. This is having a negative effect on my sex life. Is it possible to have the strings cut so short that they do not extend beyond the opening of the cervix or even removed all together?
