| it makes me feel a little bit better to hear i am not the only one with this problem. my 4 month old is going longer and longer in between bowel movements and now it seems like she is throwing up a lot too. i've been reading everything i can think of- from hirschsprungs disease to lactose intolerance.... she sometimes crunches up when she's nursing too. the ped recommended since she is 4 months, to introduce some fruit- so i would give her pears or peaches and it would help for a few days and then she's all backed up again. |

|
|
| My 4.5 month old has very infrequent bowel movement since 2 and half month. initially he did not go for 7 days until i gave him karo syrup. i waited once to see how long it took him to go by himself and i freaked out on the 11th day and gave him karo syrup. now karo syrup stopped working on him. it is the 9th day again. we've seen two doctors and has an appointment with a GI specialist in two weeks. the baby seems fine. his tummy feels soft and he is eating normal. he does seem a bit more fussy after a week without bowel movement. the doctor asked me to give him surpository. i am worried what if that stops working one day. anybody else has such issue? |

|
|
| My son is now 5 1/2 months - I have started him on solids about a month ago, and only then have I noticed his infrequent bowel movements. Besides the change in diet, I am breastfeeding him. He hasn't gone in the past 7 days, but is in great spirits. I am somewhat worried, but just hoping this is a phase he overcomes!. It was so great to read the other comments, I felt like I was the only one! ~ if anyone discovers any theories ~ please pass it along. |

| Same problem here - 4 month old baby who only has bowel movements once a week. My doctor said it was odd and to give her an ounce of pure apple juice mixed with water 50 / 50. If that does not work, he suggested a glycerine suppository. I am inclined to let it work itself out, although I may try the apple juice thing. My baby seems happy for the most part, only fusses when there is a movement on the way - usually a huge one! I don't think that a suppository is necessary as long as she seems OK |

| It's not at all uncommon for children that are exclusively breastfed to have infrequent bowel movements, some can even go up to 14 days before having a poop. Don't worry, unless your child is bloated, spitting up excessively or very unhappy. You can always use a little corn syrup mixed with some water and that should loosen things up a bit, but usually breastfed babies aren't too keen on water... |

I am a mother of 3, and have breastfed all 3, all have had the same non-pooping problem at 4 months...it is nothing to worry about, the pediatrician who works out of the famous Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto told me that the breastmilk is so healthy for them that the body doesnt want to waste it! It is amazing. If your baby is formula fed that is a different story. One of my babies went up to 11 days! They were never bothered by it either... TRUST ME when they have a problem you will know about it! |

| i have a 6 month old baby girl.. she had no problem with her poo until the doctors put her on antibiotices when she was just 4 weeks old.. since then she has had major problems with her bowel movement,, she goes up to 14 dys with no pooh.. but she passes alot of gas and she drools alot..(i think that is from that fact she is teething). is this normal for a baby to go this long without a bowel movement? she has been off the antibiotic oover 2 months now and she is still not going normal |

| my second baby had the same problem, he went once a week (sometimes longer), and it came out in floods. besides being a problem because it would inevitably leak out of the diaper, it is completely fine. they say breastfed babies can go for very long without having a bowel movement. my problem is now my one month old has the same problem, but he is in so much pain i want to help him to go more regularly. i know it is techincally "ok", but the poor little guy is not happy about it! and i think the majority of babies have gas, im not sure if it has anything to do with the bowel movement infrequency. |

I have a 4 month old boy. He is 100% breastfed baby. At 2 month, his bowel movement changed from once every feeding to once every 5 days, then longer. The pediatrician said some baby undergoes this kind of change at 2 month age. We traveled overseas when he was 3 month, we had to give him glycerin a few times since we could not wait out for more than 9 days. When we came back, the pediatrician told us we could wait out for 14 days because he is 100% breast fed. His poo poo is not hard, more like peanut butter, he certainly pass a lot of gas at day 6 and beyond. We are waitting this time, today is day 8, nothing yet. We tried prune juice 5 ml X2 yesterday, nothing come out yet.. |

I'm having similar problems with my 6 1/2 month old son. It may not be a problem since he seems happy as can be. He is mainly breastfed. We began giving him a 4oz. juice bottle once a day (2 oz. juice and 2 oz. water) at about 4 months, and we started introducing solids to him just before he was 5 months old. We give him solid foods that are not known for constipating, and he only gets half a container of one food each night.
The morning will make 6 days since his last BM. He seems happy, and his stomach is soft. My husband and I always worry, since he was born with a blockage due to a small left colon. They the colon would grow to normal size as he grew, but we needed to watch him closely. Our Pediatrician said it is normal for him to go this long, but I'm concerned that it isn't normal since he also eats solids.
Does anyone else have this problem with their infant also eating solids while breastfeeding? |
