If you have a solitary, non painful mass which is firm and discrete and if it is not tender and movable, this could be fibroadenoma. This is a benign solid lump tissue which can occur just at any age in women. It is a result of increased sensitivity to the female hormone oestrogen. Fibroadenoma is often painful and soft to the touch and could be easily moved under the skin. You could also find a few of these lumps at the same time.
Your GP may be able to say whether a lump is a fibroadenoma, but you may be referred to a breast clinic for diagnosis. There your breast may be examined by the mammogram or ultrasound or even fine needle aspiration. Women under 35 will normally have an ultrasound scan as younger breast tissue is denser and produces a less clear mammogram picture. If you have this lump and if it is not getting bigger or become painful, you will not need a treatment. Having a fibroadenoma does not increase your risk of breast cancer. However, it is still important to be breast aware and go back to your GP if you notice any further lumps or other changes.
