hello! My mom fell into depression since my dad died. I moved her to our place ( my husband’s and mine ), so that she could be around people. She has been on nortriptyline, and in the last 4 months she gained 11 pounds. Now, I know she is older, and that older people gain weight but she hasn’t before she started the drug, so I am worried about if this is how it is supposed to be or should we try to change the drug. Thank you very much!

Hi there! Yes, weight gain or loss is one of the side effects of this drug. If the weight gain persists, you should be thinking about changing. But if this is the only side effect she is experiencing, and the drug is doing her good, then maybe she should stick to it. However, what ever you do, don’t do it without talking to her doctor first. Because s/he is the one who should decided about this in communication with your mother.
