i have this too. the right side of my throat hurts when i swallow saliva, eat anything or drink anything (water included) i've tried everything and nothing helps. it's unbearable. it's worse than a regular sore throat from a cold or something cuz it'll hurt when i swallow saliva (pretty often)....rather than just when i talk... i'm thinking like infected tonsils.... do i have to get them removed??? oh sh*t... hope i dont... heard it's painful... and i dont have health insurance... uhohhhh

Try going to bed without drinking the water. You are describing one of the symptoms of gastric reflux. The variability of your symptoms is likely due to the side you sleep on and suggests there is not a chronic problem such as cancer or an infection.
You may want to try sleeping with two pillows to elevate your head, eating earlier (nothing by mouth for 3 hours prior to retiring), avoiding caffeine, fatty, acidic or spicy foods, and alcohol.
Also, a proton-pump inhibitor like Prilosec may help.

OR

Those are your tonsils, you should probably go to the doctor and have a throat swab done. You don't have to have white spots to have strep. For the pain, possibly ice water or just sucking on ice cubes. Some people get relief from cold liquids and some from warm, so whatever works for you.

I had a sore throat for 2 weeks and was severe. amoxicillin didnt help and after 2 weeks i went back to another doctor who changed the antibiotic to penicillin and after taking the 1st tablet i was feeling the pain subsiding. it may be a weired bacterial infection because i too was having pain on the left and the next day it would be the on right side of my throat with difficulty swallowing etc. hope u feel better.

Hi everyone,

Well, I have the same symptoms as pretty much everybody on here... I had a bad cold for about a week, and then it turned into a sore throat specifially on the left side and it felt like a stabbing pain whenever I swallowed and it shot up to my left ear. I suffered for about 2 days and then went to the doctor today, he perscriped me two things:

1. a mouthwash to numb my throat from any pain (PMS-Benzydamine)
2. An antibiotic called "Ran-Cefprozil"

So far I've only taken one pill out of antibiotics, and used the mouthwash once. Of course the antibiotics haven't really done much yet, but the mouthwash helped 100%! All that matters I guess is masking the pain while the antibiotics do their thing.

Yesterday evening when it was too late to go to the doc, I gargled salt water for about a minute and took an extra strengh tylenol, and that suprisingly took care of the pain very, very well!

As far as the diagnosis, the doctor just said that I had a mild throat infection that was triggered by my cold. He said that it isn't a big deal and it will go away with the antibiotics.

So don't worry everyone!!! It's a very simple fix, but see your doc! =)

I wish everyone a quick recovery!!!

I have all those symptoms two, originally my doctor thought it was strep so i got penicillin, the pain almost disappeared but when they ran out it was back again just as bad. He then though it could be mono, got a blood test done and the results were negative as well, Although he is still convinced it is mono as sometimes it can take a few weeks for the tests to show the results accurately. Im going to a specialist to have another test for mono that shows it more accurately, I also have a very tired feeling for alot of the day.

Im surprised no ones doctor on here as suggested mono, I was almost convinced thats what it was until i read this....
