How does Ortho Evra work? I’ve seen the commercial and also heard about it a lot. Can it really be effective? I somehow got used to oral contraceptives, but a simple patch on your shoulder (or any other part of the body) is just too much for me to accept. Once again, can Ortho Evra be as good as any other anti - baby pill?

Ortho Evra works on the principle of transdermal administration - the patch contains hormones norelgestromin (progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) ant it releases them continually through your skin into your blood, thus preventing ovulation, and, therefore, pregnancy as well. Patch is placed on any part of the body which is not in any way damaged during the first day of the period. After seven days it is removed and the other patch is placed instead, and the same process is repeated after another seven days. The forth weak is without patch. If Ortho Evra is used as prescribed, the level of protection goes up to 99%. Yet, it cannot protect from any STD. Certain side effects are possible while using Ortho Evra patch, such as nausea or breast tenderness. However, certain researches prove that the level of estrogen in this particular patch is up to 60% higher than in usual contraceptive pills, and this can be associated with cases of women who had heart attacks or whose clots moved and caused death. Ortho Evra patch is not to be used before a gynaecologist performs a complete check up of a woman’s condition.
