Hello there! Surgical removal of the cyst is recommended when a cyst becomes too large, if it doesn’t look like a functional cyst (the most common that goes away on its own), if the cyst is still growing and has been present for over 2-3 cycles and if it causes symptoms (like pain or swelling of the abdomen).
There are a several procedures your doctor may recommend. This depends on your age, if you are pre-menopausal or post menopausal and on a cyst type.
Your doctor could perform a cystectomy, which is removal of the cyst leaving ovaries intact. They may also decide to perform oophorectomy. Oophorectomy includes removal of the both cyst and affected ovary but leaving the second ovary, which would not impair your ability to get pregnant or cause other negative symptoms due to lack of estrogen ( produced by ovaries).
If you were menopausal, the cyst could be cancerous and in that case, your doctor may decide to perform hysterectomy to remove both ovaries and your uterus. Hysterectomy should always be the last choice!
Some doctors decide to perform a surgery when they think that the cyst could rupture and make the ovary twist and stop blood flow to the ovary. This is an emergency situation that could be fatal but it is also very rare.
If you are not sure about your doctor’s decision to remove your cyst, you are always allowed to ask for a second opinion and ask for any information like what kind of cyst you have developed and what kind of surgery they would perform! Good luck! |
