i just had my surgery yesterday at four pm...took a valium and one 500 mg vicodin...feeling pretty normal still they insert lidocain shot which sting a little to block the anus... the procedure was painless...i went to the colorectal center (dr million) in san francisco she is great...they band the hemroids which is 100 percent pain free..believe it or not...i decided i didn't want the ugly skin tags lefts so i opted to have them removed all at once which most people do in three treatments...i am all for getting things done one time plus i have a high tolerance to pain. feeling fine i left but after the lidocain block wore off i was in major pain...i thought about riding bart - could you imagine if i took bart home crying and moaning holding my bottom? people would have cleared the way from me...the major pain lasted only five hours...and decreased. i did take a bunch of vicodin and valium but it didn't completely take away the pain....i was not in pain after five hours just major discomfort a dull feeling...plus there was swelling so your booty feels swollen and hard on the exterior...the best help for me was not the sitz bath which put pressure on that area but a bath where i could lay back. i used an ionic blowdryer after every urination and bath to keep the area clean and dry. i got a prescription for lidocain 5 % not sure if this helps or not but i mix it with neosporen on the top. last night i could sleep at all due to too much meds and discomfort but i was not in excructiating pain....today is 100 times better i even drove my daughter to school...so i figure only a few days to recover...maybe by the weekend..

[quote="flaten"]
I think that hemorrhoidectomy pain can be alleviated with the use of topical anesthetic creams or suppositories and oral pain medications. Tell him that lying on one’s side or sitting on soft cushions is helpful, if he doesn’t know already. I believe that there are special cushions just for hemorrhoid sufferers. Although it can seem like an eternity to a recovering hemorrhoid surgery patient, hemorrhoidectomy pain does not usually last very long at all. Maybe that is why his doctor hasn’t prescribed him anything. Anyway, maybe you should ask pharmacist what is best for him.

I am having surgery in a few weeks for internal hems, they dont cause me any pain but they pop out Rolling Eyes most days and bleed a lot,(very large amounts)
After reading these posts, I am terriffied, not of the op, but the pain. Isnt there some sort of spray to numb the area? I remember when I was breastfeeding my children (30 yrs ago) my midwife gave me a spray to numb my nipples coz they were so painful............and it worked!
There must be something out there??????????????? Sad

People all react differently to surgery. Some have weeks of unbearable pain other are fine after some days. I had traditional surgery last wednesday and several large hemroids removed. Compared to other surgery I had, it is not as bad as I thought it would be after reading the comments on this site. It is painful at times (like a thousand needles and fire burning) but it is not like it is painfull all the time. You may have some bad and very bad moments but most of the time it is o.k.

Tips:
Ask for (lumbar) spinal anesthesia. Reason: Your anus will feel numb much longer than with general anesthesia. Once you wake up from GA you're in pain and with spinal, you enjoy at least 5 to 6 hours pain free.

If you can afford it, ask to stay two nights in the hospital. They can take much better care of you than you can do yourself. Discuss pain with your surgeon before the operation and discuss a plan. Ask for painkiller the moment you feel your legs come back to life. My surgeon started with one injection of piritramid (morphine sort) a couple of hours afer surgery and continued with shots of Voltaren about every 6 to 8 hours. Your first 2 days are then pretty much pain free and you can heal in comfort. That is the way it should be. Pain should be a thing of the past.

Don't eat too much to avoid BM for some days. My first BM was today and it was not real bad. Strange but using the toilet standing up, the pain is much less. Don't wipe after but rinse your butt in the shower. That cleans better and more comforteable. Drink water, eat fiber, lots of fruits and vegetables and just hang on for some days.

Living a life without the discomfort and embarrassement of hemroids itching, burning and bleeding is worth it 1000%.

i am on my third week after the hemroidectomy. It is a very painful recovery and my doctor did not warn me about the pain at all. I take stool softener daily, and i think it is important to do so to avoid straining. I also take metamucel every morning to become regular, and I try to drink plenty of fluid; the key here is NOT to become constipated while recovering. The warm baths helped at the beginning but do not make the water too hot like I have done. This will give you extremely painful anal spasms after 15 minutes of soaking - and of course my doctor never mentioned what temperature the water should be set at. Pain killers for me do not work well enough the pain is still strong. Right now i have much less anal pain but passing stool still feels like a blow-torch, though is better, i do use a anal cream to help the internal healing, called anamantle Hc. I think it is helping but inserting the applicator in the anus is a bit painful though not impossible - just need to be careful. Doctor says full recovery is 2 months - hopefully he is correct. hope all this info helps other folks here that are in pain.

If you are considering a hemroidectomy DON'T DO IT. This is worse than having babies all natural with no pain meds. I have had three babies. I'm 7 weeks into recovery and I still don't see an end to this night mare. The Doctor lied to me and said it would be up and around in 3-4 days or a week. LIAR LIAR LIAR.... When I woke up I was in severe pain and needed Morphine. I went home and thought I was going to die for the first 3 days I thought he accidently sewed my anus up. He prescribed Vicoden which by the way constapates you. When I had my first bowel movement I wanted to die. It was like passing rocks. The next 3 weeks was not much better. I relied heavly on sits bath and witch hazel & Tylenol x-tra strenght. Six weeks later I was able to have a bowel movement without crying. Now 7 weeks later no tears however I have extreme pain and lucky me I have 3 more hemroids. I will let them grow to my knees I will never have a hemroidectomy again....

Can someone help me. iam 10 weeks past my full hemroidectomy. I had 3 internal hemes removed on dec 14th, 2007. The doctor said he removed alot of tissue. also had a rectocele repair and bladder neck suspension doen at the same time. My butt still hurts when i have a bowel movement. the bleeding has subsided alot. some times i still have to take 1/2 a vicoden to make it through a work day. Doctor says everything is healing fine. There are still skin tags which i understand but the anus seems to bulge out. could this still be swelling. and if it is how long has it lasted for some of you. Please answer i will be looking for you.

I had my surgery three days ago and finally had a successful movement this afternoon. It was painful but now I feel much better. My doctor suggested a high-fiber diet, bran muffins and metamucil, for the first days along with Senocot as a stool softener. That wasn't enough for me and I stopped eating yesterday. He also perscribed Oxycodone for pain and Lorazepam as a muscle relaxant. Neither worked well for me. The Oxycodone made me nauseous and dizzy with that sick mediciney feeling. Lorazepam put me to sleep. I found that Advil was better for me - I took four pills, ten to fifteen minutes before I used a Fleet's enema. Success Smile A quick warm sitz bath afterwards and the world is much better now. My understanding is that the first BM is the worst so I'm much relieved. I hope this works for you too. Good luck

I had a hem-ectomy and a fissurectomy 8 days ago. Initially, the Dr told me I would be able to return to work (desk job) the following Monday if I had the surgery done on Friday. He told me the pain would be similar to recovering after child birth. Let me tell you, the pain after childbirth was nothing compared to this and I just had a baby 10 months ago. I tried returning to work 6 days after surgery and only made it 2 hours. Late that afternoon I was in so much pain I was crying, screaming, moaning, etc. and my 16 and 14 year old daughters were mortified. They seriously thought I was dying and nearly called 911. Thankfully, they called my sister in law instead who called my Dr who called me in an RX for generic Ketorolac. Within 5 minutes, I felt 80 % better (ask your dr for this - it is the wonder drug and doesn't take over your mind and body like most pain meds do). I was actually able to hold a normal conversation without wanting to cry and blubber in pain. The following day was my 1 week follow up (yesterday) and they took out the major stitches and showed me the picture of what he ended up calling "major surgery" - it was only supposed to be a simple "procedure". If I had seen that picture before yesterday, I would have never gotten out of bed. It looked like something from a horror movie. I don't know how many stitches there were, but from the looks of the 3 huge incisions they made, the picture looked like there were probably about 40 stitches in my behind. No wonder it hurt so badly. He said when they got in to do the fissuectomy, they discovered 3 hems under the fissure as well as other hems on the inside and outside. Therefore, the moral of the story is to ask your doctor before you leave the office if they ended up doing more than was originally discussed. If I had known the pain I would go through in the aftermath, I would have never elected to do this surgery willfully - at least until my 10 month old baby was much older. 3/29/08
