He told me the pain would be similar to recovering after child birth. Let me tell you, the pain after childbirth was nothing compared to this and I just had a baby 10 months ago. I tried returning to work 6 days after surgery and only made it 2 hours. Late that afternoon I was in so much pain I was crying, screaming, moaning, etc. and my 16 and 14 year old daughters were mortified. They seriously thought I was dying and nearly called 911. Thankfully, they called my sister in law instead who called my Dr who called me in an RX for generic Ketorolac. Within 5 minutes, I felt 80 % better (ask your dr for this - it is the wonder drug and doesn't take over your mind and body like most pain meds do). I was actually able to hold a normal conversation without wanting to cry and blubber in pain. The following day was my 1 week follow up (yesterday) and they took out the major stitches and showed me the picture of what he ended up calling "major surgery" - it was only supposed to be a simple "procedure". If I had seen that picture before yesterday, I would have never gotten out of bed. It looked like something from a horror movie. I don't know how many stitches there were, but from the looks of the 3 huge incisions they made, the picture looked like there were probably about 40 stitches in my behind. No wonder it hurt so badly. He said when they got in to do the fissuectomy, they discovered 3 hems under the fissure as well as other hems on the inside and outside. Therefore, the moral of the story is to ask your doctor before you leave the office if they ended up doing more than was originally discussed. If I had known the pain I would go through in the aftermath, I would have never elected to do this surgery willfully - at least until my 10 month old baby was much older. 3/29/08 |
My sympathies go to you for your fissurectomy. I had extensive hemorrhoids and the surgical recovery was HORRID. When I returned for my post-op exam (6 weeks later) I overheard a patient in the exam room next to mine yelling and groaning then sobbing like a child. He was getting a rectal exam at the time. I heard the surgeon explain to him, "You have internal hemorrhoids but that is not what was causing the pain in my examination of your rectum. You have a fissure beneath the lining of your rectum and this is oftentimes extremely painful." <- This coming from a doctor who told me my surgery was going to be simple and did not warn about any pain.
Then he went on to explain to the patient (a healthy, young male) that the surgery was going to be a simple procedure and he would be discharged in the same day.
Good luck on your recovery. As they say, "Time heals all wounds." For colorectal patients this needs to be modified somewhat: "Time heals all wounds but the chances are you're not going to forget this healing." |

Man, I wish I would of read all these things before I decided to have my surgery done. Its been a month tomorrow since I had the painfully agonizing pph surgery as well as a prolapsed rectum. Recovery time takes forever. Even though my doctor told me as well it wouldnt hurt and i would be back at work that monday as well. Isn't it funny how doctors lie to you. I had a c-section 4 years ago, and nothing compares to pph/prolapsed rectum surgery. I have been on so many types of meds (creams ointments, pain killers, nsaids) and i still feel like shit, its not the pain that bothers me, it's just that i feel like i still have hemmrhoids (buring/itching/swelling feeling) Is this normal to still feel this way? i am with everyone else, i do not reccommend it for anyone, just deal w/ your hemmrhoids, they suck but its 10 times better than this. And when does the blood stop? Its been a month tomorrow and I still have blood, is this normal this far out? Again, i'm w/ you all on the never have this procedure done thing!
Thanks for listening! |
