painful to pass waste during pregnancy

Each time i go to pass waste i find it incredibly painful, am finding blood on the toilet tissue also. I am 18 weeks pregnant and am eating plenty of fruits etc. Is it the pregnancy that is causing the difficulty or is there some other underlying problem? Should i go to see my GP? Also would it help if i used vasoline to ease the pain whilst passing waste?
