Its been two weeks. I went home with cathator overnight and removed the next day. I had immediate improvement in urine flow. It was wonderful.
The first week I passed a few drops of blood in the urine (for a couple of days I didn't pass any. Than the second week it has reoccured with burning. However, sudden urgency and frequency is much improved. I can actually watch TV for a couple hours without having the urge. I do have sudden urgency now post op if I have a very full baldder and if I wait too long I will wet myself. I also the first week would wet myself in trying to shut down peeing. That's pretty much been resolved. I just had my two week checkup. The burning is getting worse and I'm passing a little more blood. The doctor said my urine was questionable and put me on levaquin (sp). I suspect I have either a urinary or prostate infection. I hope that resolves soon. My doctor said I will probably have my wetting and blood issues resolved soon.
He still won't let me lift anything over 10 pounds. He said I could have sex.
I checkout out the system, and I do have retrograde ejaculation. Had I not had he said some blood would have come out. The ogasm wasn't great, but than I always judged my orgasms on the arount of fluid that came out. I can't no that anymore. Its an ego thing I'll have to live with.

I just had PVP surgery a week and a half ago. My experience has not been as bad as you guys. I have an over active bladder; so I am taking a drug called Enablex. It has really helped. I also had burning urination for a couple of days after the surgery. I was taking a drug called Phenazopyridine; it turns your urine orange but really helps the burning. I don’t need to take it now. I've been lucky, I'm only getting up half as much as I was at night. The flow is much better now. I do seem to have a soreness in the area I have always thought of as the sphincter muscle I don't know if it's related but I'm thinking it is. I would be interested if any of you have had a similar problem. I have some leakage and some urgency but really no worse than before and it seems to be improving. Good luck to all of you.

I had PVP Laser surgery 6 weeks ago. I had pain on urinating and bleeding for 4 weeks with bladder urgency & pain. That has mostly subsided now. I have retrograde ejaculation and the intensity of orgasm is greatly diminished which is a major issue for me now. If orgasm was rated on a scale of 1-10 with 10 the best, my pre-op was a 10 and now it is a 1.

I am also having difficulty recovering and my doctor makes me feel like I am bothering him each time I talk to him or e-mail him. This is my 2nd operation. I had a TUIP in November and now a PVP laser in Feb. The first did not work, so I had a 2nd. He was supposed to use a Holmium laser, but during the operation he changed it to a PVP because some filiment wasn't available for the Holmium. SOunds like grounds for lawsuit if you ask me. In any event, 7 weeks after the procedure, I am going more frequently than I ever have. All day long today I went at the most, every 5 minutes and the least, every 20 minutes. At this rate I will never drink anything again, just to stay in one place for an hour. At night it gets better, but I am not drinking anything either.
I am on vesicare, which to me, I should not be on it. SHouldn't surgery corret everything? My doctor told me to double the dosage and I already was, so it will be interesting to see. He also told me to wait 3 months and it will get better. How come on every website about PVP surgery it says recovery time is very short, a matter of days? Should I be worried? Should I seek out another doctor. He is supposed to be the best in my area, but I am questioning that.

Contrary to literature PVP, TURP and TUIP are not always simple "two weeks and you'll feel better" procedures. Although you cannot see the wound site this is till a significant trauma and your body takes time to recover from it. Even for the lesser TUIP (also known as a Bladder Neck Incision) they say that full benefits of the operation will not usually be experienced until 8 to 12 weeks after surgery. The wound doesn't fully heal for 6 to 12 weeks.

PVP and other operations remove an obstruction which is why obstructive symptoms get better quite quickly. However they do not immediately resolve irritative symptoms. This is because your bladder gets in bad habits and even though the obstruction has been removed it continues to try and push urine out the way it's gotten used to. Symptoms can take several months to resolve.

Bottom line is to stick with it. If you feel you're getting gradually better then it's a case of gritting your teeth and bearing it. If you feel things haven't improved or have got worse then you need to be discussing things with your surgeon. However, if the operation has been successful in terms of removing the obstruction generally speaking they will fade. It just takes time.

Are you eating bland foods? A good diet will help. Drink a lot of water. Acidy, fatty foods will make it burn more.

Do a search on Kegel execrices. The sphincter muscles need to be strengthened.

I had my surgery on the 17th. All went well. Straining from constipation will cause you to bleed again. I was clear of blood until I did that. I passed a lot of blood and scabs. One got stuck and I had to have the cath again. The cath just pushed it back into the prostate. When it came out again I was able to push it out urinating. Two days later I was clear from bleeding again. No more dribbling either. Feminine pads work good for that. I am going much less frequently now. If I wasn't sitting around eating and drinking all the time it would be less. Very little burn. Much stronger stream. It will take a while to get used to not automatically go to the bathroom all the time. My suggestions are no straining on voiding, eat bland foods and non acidy drinks too. Acidy urine will burn. Drink a lot of water and liquids during recovery. Don't do physical work or lift for a couple weeks. Do kegel exercises for the sphincter muscles to strengthen them back up again. That will help for better orgasm and to stop dribbling.

well fellas,

Opps I did it again...I had my second PVP laser surgery april 10 2007, same doctor and same hospital. stayed overnight with irrigation catherer in and released home 24 hrs later. went to doc office next day at 9am to remove catherer. doc was not in but nurse told me of medicine for painful urination (urelle??). Wow i got the meds and have taken them for 8 weeks now. still hurts when i pee but alot less intense..so if U are experiencing painful urination after laser surgery have the doc get this med for you. I still have weak stream and uregency/frequency but more tolerable than first time...Doc said stay on proscar otherwise prostate will grow like a weed. my psa # came down during the year between 1 & 2nd laser surgery while on proscar. Hope this is the end of the green light !!
take care fellas

I had my laser PVP procedure on April 26th. I was kept in the hospital overnight because I didn't come out of recovery until 8:30 P.M. I would recommend staying in the hospital overnight if at all possible, despite the number of people who go home the same day with instructions on how to remove their own catheter the next day. I had some bleeding for the first three weeks when I started to urinate. I returned to desk duty at work 10 days after my surgey with my doctor's permission, but I probably should have waited a few days longer.

Before my surgery I was getting up as many as 14 times in the night to go to the bathroom. I now get up a maximum of twice, if at all. I always had to know where every bathroom was, and I couldn't travel by car because I continually had emergencies that required me getting off the interstate to find a place to go. I just got back from a weekend car trip from Phoenix to Albuquerque and back with no urgent episodes.

While I do have a sense of urgency when the time comes to go, I'll take that to having to wait and dribble for two or three minutes because I couldn't get started. My stream is strong and getting stronger, and I have no discomfort except for an occassional pain in the head of my penis that is proabbly related to the healing process.

Four weeks after surgery, and everything works sexually. The intensity of orgasm seems deminished, but I'm convinced that it will improve with time, although it isn't bad now. I do continue to pass bits of stuff, but that just tells me that I'm healing.

The worst part of the procedure was having the catheter removed. I am very happy with my results, and would do it again if necessary.

Only words of advice are to find a doctor who will answer all your questions, follow your doctor's recommendations, make sure your insurance is on board, and keep a positive attitude.
