One friend of mine listen something on the radio and they mention pectus excavatum. I did not understand what does it mean, as well as mine friend did not. That is why we would like to hear what that is. Can anyone give us any info about it, because we are interested into human anatomy? We guess that is some chest deformity, but that is all we know for now.

Pectus excavatum is also known as sunken chest, and that is a congenital chest wall deformity. Problem is that several ribs and the sternum grow abnormally, producing a concave, or caved-in, appearance to the anterior chest wall. The exact mechanism involved in this abnormal bone and cartilage overgrowth is not known for now. In addition, there is no genetic defect is known that is directly responsible for the development of pectus excavatum. This is the most common type of congenital chest wall abnormality, followed by pectus carinatum, cleft sternum, pentalogy of Cantrell, etc. This condition is typically noticed at birth, and more than 90% of cases are diagnosed during first year of life. Worsening of the appearance of the chest is usually reported at the time of rapid bone growth in the early teenage years. Many patients are not brought to the attention of a pediatric surgeon until the time that such changes are noted by patient itself. The appearance of the chest can be very disturbing to young teenagers, and cause many complexes. Problems with self-esteem and body image perception are frequently reported in teenagers, which is definitely a problem with pectus excavatum.
