hey im male and im 14 years old on my penis around the mushroom area there is swelling im really scared and could you tell me what it is.

Do you have foreskin? Have you been washing under the foreskin regularly? Many boys don’t even know that they need to wash the area under the foreskin thoroughly and under “the mushroom”. This is important because the sebum (white oily substance that lubricates the penis) can get accumulated under the foreskin and if it is not cleaned regularly, it can get inflamed and even infected by bacteria or yeast. Then it would make the area swell, become red and even hurt. If the area is only swollen, you may try to apply some hydrocortisone cream to relieve the swelling but if nothing helps, then you should be seen by a doctor.

There is another possible reason for the “mushroom” swelling and this condition is called paraphimosis. It occurs when the foreskin gets stuck behind the head of penis and will not move. This prevents blood from getting in and out to the penis head and is actually very serious condition. If this has occurred and if your penile head is turning blue, you should go to the ER immediately.
