pin removal

recently had an open fracture of my index finger,crushed knuckle, and another fracture on the bone from my knuckle to wrist. 3 hrs. of surgery, 4 pins and one screw, annd a month and a half off of work . now my question is this ,,,,,, the surgeon told me that in 4 weeks ill be back to see if the bones have healed enough to have the pins removed. Whats the procedure for the removale ? pain?
