My father is 76 years old and he has been living with diabetes for almost a decade now. He is holding up very well, considering the age, but still I am worried. He is old and any major complication could be fatal. Can you tell me something about possible complications of type 1 diabetes?

Well, let me get straight to the point. Diabetes brings a higher risk for stroke, heart attack and conditions linked with damaged circulation. Diabetes can also affect kidneys, disabling their main filtering function and causing nephropathy. Eye problems may also occur, and if not treated might lead to total blindness. One of the most common conditions is diabetic neuropathy (illness that attacks the nerves). Other complications include depression, gastroparesis, skin problems etc.
