Hi, my sister is reaching the day when she will deliver a baby. She has been pregnant for eight months and everything was going on just fine. Couple of days ago, while going on her regular check-up, she had high blood pressure and high level of proteins in the urine. The doctor prescribed some medicine and advised my sister to rest. Is this condition a pregnancy disorder?

Hi, the symptoms you described, high blood pressure and high protein level in the urine, consist with preeclampsia. This condition belongs in the group of pregnancy disorders. Usually, it appears at the end of the pregnancy. There are several reasons that can lead to preeclampsia. Such are: decreased blood flow to the uterus, injury of the blood vessels or damage to their lining, a disorder in the hormones that are important for maintaining blood vessels, autoimmune condition, poor nutrition and lack of calcium and or magnesium. Delivering the baby is the only permanent cure for this kind of pregnancy disorder. After it, within few days, the blood pressure will return to normal. But there can also be some complications. Because of the high blood pressure, mothers can be at the risk of severe bleeding, seizures and placental abruption until the pressure stabilizes. The medications and rest, like the doctor prescribed, are only the first aid in order to keep the pregnancy without any risk.
