Sweetkisses- Look you are obviously intelligent enough to know that there "might" be a chance that marijuana can harm your child, or at least you have a conscience that is sending off red alerts.... Personally I have no children and am not pregnant but I do smoke A LOT and I could never imagine that it would be a good thing for babies. If I were you I would listen to your conscience, it's better to be safe than sorry |

| I am a mother of two..my eight year old daughter was born first and I was a heavy pot smoker up 'til we found out I was pregnant(7 weeks along)..then I quit 'til after her birth..she was born at a very good weight (7 lbs 12 oz.) but had respiratory problems after birth and even had seizures and a stroke that almost killed her..thank God she is fine today..my six year old son was born second and I unfortunately did not bring myself to stop smoking at all during the whole of the pregnancy..he was born at a good weight too (7 lbs 11 oz.) but we noticed right away the difference..while my daughter had very good sleeping and eating patterns, he did not..he was very irritable and cried almost constantly..he was fussy all the time, did not want to sleep and was difficult to feed and burp..while my daughter slept her nights at just 1 month of age my son still did not at 1 and a half year of age..there was a clear cut difference...I smoked for two months for my daughter and was seven months clean before her birth and still saw consequences although much milder than for my son whom I consumed daily 'til the day of his birth..I am now six months pregnant with my third (a boy again!!) and this time things are different..I've been good all the way and have been for a while since before conceiving..my opinion..don't do it while pregnant...it is only nine months and true that the money is useful elsewhere..this is a mother's first chance to make good decisions for her child..don't start off on the wrong foot.. |

|
|
Hi. I am 7 months pregnant and smoke marijuana, but only after much research about it effects and benefits, and yes, that's right, I still smoke. Basically, throughout all of my research I have found that the most harmful side effect..the only one that can actually be determined..is the same as smoking cigarettes. Depriving the baby of oxygen while lighting a joint is the most harmful side effect just as in smoking a cigarette. Luckily, I don't know anyone who smokes pot and cigarettes at the same rate, so it is my conclusion that smoking pot is actually better than cigarettes for an unborn fetus.
I would agree that abstaining from both would be the best, but the calming effects of marijuana have certainly helped me during this pregnancy and in my last one. And yes, I smoked 9 months of my last pregnancy (7 years ago), he's actually in the Gifted and Talented program at school. ( I attribute that to his inheritance of MY genes, not so much the pot smoking.)
Further, pot has helped me through the bouts of morning sickness and a stubborn loss of appetite. Many professionals have tried to use scare tactics to discourage my use, however none of them can tell me of any side effects that they HAVE WITNESSED-that are not wivestales anyway.
If you do smoke, make sure that you are clean before you go into the hospital. Depending on the state that you live in, there are some heavy consequences for a mother being positive, and therefore her baby, of any drug. Stop a few weeks before you are due, just in case the baby decides to drop in early! |

I strongly encourage those of you who continue to judge pregnant women who smoke to educate yourselves. This is an extremely informative article that synthesizes almost every major study done on this issue:
mothering.com/articles/pregnancy_birth/birth_preparation/marijuana-side4.html
Here in Canada, marijuana is an acceptable way to treat morning sickness.
nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=749e9fc9-e581-4acd-9ee0-fcef72bc0825
I find it amazing that women find no problem with taking Zofran or Diclectin, strong pharmaceuticals, for morning sickness but balk at the notion of using a perfectly safe herb that has been effectively employed by indigenous women for thousands of years.
See also the seminal study done by Dr. Dreher in Jamaica that isolated marijuana smokers from other drug and tobacco users (something that North American studies have failed to do, causing erroneous conclusions to be derived from these studies).
medicalcannabis.com/pregnancy.htm
I would not have been able to survive my first trimester without the help of pot. The notion that women who do not "know better" are the ones who smoke is false. I have a PhD, have smoked for years before I got pregnant and continue to smoke today.

| My Mother smoked weed the whole time she was pregnant with me also her brother died in her first month and in her 2nd month my father ran around on her so as u can see she was very depressed.anyways the point is,is that i have OCD ( Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and ADD. Over time i have become to belive that it may have had something to do with why i have OCD and ADD.i smoke weed every day and iam absoulutly misserable without it.it Helps me take my mind off my OCD and not have as much aniexty. Its Crazy because if weed caused my OCD than why is it such a healer for it??? If weed does cause OCD than i would strongly suguest not using it |

I just want to point out that anything you do CAN have an affect on your pregnancy. I was even told once that when pregnant I shouldn't eat corn because it was hard to digest and would cause my child to have an allergy to grass. (One of the many examples of people saying this is bad for you don't do it)
To be honest, smoking marijuana while pregnant is a personal choice. Yes, in the USA the drug is an illegal substance, but that doesn't really prevent people from doing it.
Also, ImmortalOne, you stated that if a woman reports to her Doctor that she is smoking/drinking/using marijuana that he MUST report to CPS. That is not the case, perhaps in some states it is, but as of now, that law isn't in place in all 50 states. Not taking care of your body while pregnant isn't illegal as the law cannot dictate how you handle your own pregnancy. Though CPS can try and build a case against a parent who uses marijuana while pregnant, stating that she is building an irresponsible habit and will be unable to give the child a proper lifestyle. Most first time mothers escape CPS, and the children of said mother are usually fine.
Its extremely hard to determine the exact effect any substance will have on your body (asides the proven ones - alcohol, etc.)
Personally I wouldn't want to risk anything, and since I have a hard time getting pregnant I would want to do everything to the best of my ability. But I am not going to judge someone and say "You are wrong".
I think its best to use your own judgment and decide what is best for you. |

Posted: 09/26/08 - 15:41 Post subject: Why would you even take a chance? |
|
|
| If there was even the slightest chance that harm would be done, why would you consider smoking anything during pregnancy. This is the height of selfishness and irresponsibility. If you can't make it through a pregnancy without pot, how will you make it through life? The Bloomberg study has shown a direct correlation between pot smoking and decreased brain function. Often times, this presents in the form of ADD or ADHD. Note the dramatic increase in autism. Could that be related to pot smoking during pregnancy? Don't know? Then DON'T DO IT! Smoking anything during pregnancy can and often does decrease birth weight. For the love of God, can you not put down the pot for nine months? |
