Every woman who hasn’t had measles as a kid and who hasn’t been vaccinated with measles vaccine should have the vaccination before becoming pregnant. A pregnant woman is not allowed to take the vaccine during pregnancy.
A woman who is pregnant less than five months may pass measles to her unborn child. The transmission is very likely to happen and this may cause all sorts of negative effects on the baby. If the unborn child gets the disease within first 12 weeks, it is very likely to suffer from many debilitating problems like blindness, deafness or heart damage. If it occurs between the week 16 and 20, there is a big chance that the baby will be born deaf.
If a baby gets the disease, it can’t be treated because there is no treatment for babies. These babies will be effected their whole lives. Every tenth baby will die if contracts the measles within first 12 weeks.
It is also said that pregnant women with measles may miscarriage or give birth prematurely.
