Well, the chances are slim but you never know! Here is a general rule about what to do when you miss a pill. You should always have a back-up contraceptive in case this happens. Back-up contraceptives can be condoms, foams or diafragma
To work properly, birth control pills need to be taken at the same time very day (+-3 hours, not more). It is said that every time you miss a pill, there is a possibility that you will ovulate.
So, if you miss just 1 pill:
• take it the moment you remember and your next pill at the regular time. If this is the case, back-up doesn’t need to be taken
If you miss 2 pills:
Take 2 pills on the day you remember and 2 pills the next day, use back-up contraceptive in the next 7 days
If you miss 3 pills in a row:
• you should throw away your pack and start a new one
• If you are Day 1 starter, you can take a new package that same day but if you are a Sunday starter, you may continue taking one pill until Sunday and then take a new package
Don’t forget to use a back-up contraceptive each time you miss a pill.
These rules may differ from brand to brand, so you should always check the instructions at the back of your package |
