As most women approach menopause, their menstrual periods become irregular. They happen closer together or further apart. Did you noticed any other changes, like changes in sexual desire, extreme sweating, frequent urination, hot flashes… problems with sleeping....well, you may have one, some, or none of these symptoms, but they can be very unpredictable and disturbing if a woman doesn't know they are related to menopause. Menopause is the time at "midlife" when a woman has her last period and it happens when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. Sometimes is a gradual process, but sometimes it happens all at once. The average age for menopause is 51, but if menopause is reached naturally or surgically before the age of 40, it is called early or premature menopause or perimenopause. So, it may begin as early as 40 and it is the period of gradual changes that lead into menopause. During perimenopause hormone levels fluctuate, estrogen level drops, causing changes just as they did during adolescence. For most women perimenopause will last 2-3 years, though for some it lasts as long as 10 or 12. Did you notice that you might be more anxious that you used to be, or you have frequent mood changes?
