Protruding breastbones are often nothing to worry about, especially during adolescence. However, for the few of you that just posted, noting that you are unusually tall, you may want to ask your doctor about marfan syndrome. A list of symptoms can be found at:
http://www.marfan.org/nmf/GetContentRequestHandler.do?menu_item_id=4
Now it could very well be that you are just going through puberty, and growing the way i did (9 inches in one year). However, my parents had the same concerns, both of whom are doctors and it seems like the mixture of unusual height and protruding breastbone may have some important connection. |

| I am 15 year old and also have this "Pigeon" chest thing. When i have found is that it is damaging me mentally rather than pyhsically. I find that I am constantly trying to hide my chest and i never go swimming in public which is obviously not good. It cannot be doing me any good to be worrying about it every day, however i was just wondering what I can do about it. Thanks! |

| Hello everybody I just wanted to say I have this same condition too with the protruding bone in my chest. I noticed it around when i was 14-15 and it didn't cause me too much trouble. I feel pain sometimes in the morning while breathing in the particular area that is protruding after sleeping on my side for the night. It is kind of bothersome to have I was wondering if this could be serious in the future and was also wondering if surgery is the only way to prevent the serious issues from happening. can anybody help> |

| ok this is pretty weird cuz im 15 as well and have the same problem haha. i asked my doctor about it and he said i have a minor case but i still get called uniboob and try to hide it when swimming and all that stuff. i started puberty pretty late so does that have anything to do with it? its not really affecting my life that much but just annoying me. i have one question for all of you, are all of you skinny like me to some extent? because i would imagine that this would emphasize it. anyway im glad i found this site because its very reassuring to know that it can go away around 18 and to read some advice. in fact i think i may go life weights now to bulk up my pecs... |

| i am 22 and i first noticed my pectus carinatum at about 6 or 7 years old. i was diagnosed with a growth condition when i was younger but my sternum grew at a very regular rate. it was once measured at protruding more than 4 1/4 in. it currently resides at about 2/12 to 3 in. i was in the air force the only thing i had to do was get a waiver signed saying that there was no limiting factors that the condition may cause. i know that the psych factor is pretty harsh on most. i have had it a long time so i have learned that it is part of me and i shouldnt hide from my self. when i was young i used to try and hide it but you would be amazed that a lot people dont really notice until you point it out or they see you with your shirt off. i still get the uniboob thing and a few other nick names ive picked up over the years but if someone makes a rude comment i will call them on it. i was never really able to do the brace thing because the condition isnt very common and i didnt see my first specialist until i was 11 or 12. at that point for me my chest was too pronounced and my only choice would have been surgery. at this point i dont have any heart conditions that i know about, i have minor scoliosis (curvature of the spine) which can be related to pectal irregularities, but nothing major. i have had many x-rays and they can be very important in the diagnosis that you receive. i have been told that my experience is different from most but its comforting to know what others are going through because it all seems to be close to the same story. by the way, what do girls think about your chests? that one is still a mystery to me it seems to be hit or miss.[/img] |

Hi
I also have a protruding sternum.
I am now 17 and have had it for a few years now
I can't actually remember when it started
I went to the doctor a few years ago, but he wasn't too worried
He seemed to say that there were more problems if your chest caved inwards.
I am still hoping that it will dissappear by the time I'm 19!
I suppose I am quite concious about it especially as at 17 your want to look your best with girls around!
I am doing daily pressups and chest building exercises at the moment to try and improve things.
Reading some of the quotes about heart murmors has worried me a little because my long life dream has been to train as an airline pilot.
Although last year I did have a medical check which involved a cardiovascogram and the specialist didn't mention any problems with my heart. He didn't even seem to notice my chest or perhaps he was just being polite.
I am so pleased to have found this site as I have been wondering for a few years now.
Any advice is always most welcome |
