Hi I am so worried because my grandfather is in hospital. He had orthopedic operation on his hip. His doctor said that there is great possibility of pulmonary embolism. Right now he is in a very fragile state. I know that pulmonary embolism is a very dangerous, even lethal disease, so I need to know something on the topic of pulmonary embolism prevention.

Hi, do not worry. Pulmonary embolism is serious, condition, but there exists pulmonary embolism prevention and it is effective. When we say prevention we think of antycoaqgulation therapy (one that uses heparin) or if there is a thrombus we use medicaments that can decompose it (streptokinasis, for example). There is also embolectomia. This surgery is a last line of defense.
