raynaud's and swallowing problems

Hi, almost a year ago a friend of mine was diagnosed with Raynaud's disease. Ever since, he was put on some medication therapy. He also needs to dress up a bit warmer and also puts on some kind of gloves since his fingertips are affected. Now a new problem arose. He has some swallowing difficulties. Are raynaud's and swallowing problems related?

Hi, you need to advise your friend to go to the doctor as soon as possible. Raynaud's disease is a blood circulation problem. It disables sufficient blood flow to some body parts, in your friend's case fingers. The symptoms are numbness and change of color of the fingers (they turn white). Raynaud's can be a disease for itself but can also point to some other conditions. One can have Raynaud's for a long time before it is evident that another condition is present. Since your friend has difficulties swallowing, the only connection that can be made between this problem and Raynaud's is a condition called scleroderma. Actually to more precise, I think that your friend has systematic scleroderma. One of its symptoms is gastroesophageal reflux which makes the swallowing difficult. Like I said before, it is important that your friend pays a visit to the doctor so that he can analyze the newly developed situation.
