I had gallblader surgery 3 weeks ago and the pain in my back ( right upper back) is so intense I can't sleep at night. This can't be normal... My surgeon said today that it was muscular. Maybe so, but it all started after this surgery. What is my solution. He gives me no meds for it and it is now 4:00 in the morning and I can"t sleep for this pain.. The heating pad gives no relief. Any suggestions.

I had my GB removed 2 weeks ago today. Felt great until 3 days ago. I started to experience the same upper right back pain that I had prior to the surgery. Not as bad as prior to the surgery, but still there nonetheless. I do NOT have any right side pain or pain near the rib cage. I also do not have any issues with acid reflux or pain in the chest. Although I must say my bathroom habits have been better! Prior to the surgery the pain in my right side was relativley mild. I had reservations about having my GB removed since I never really had INTENSE pain as I have read some people describe. However after my post-op visit with my surgeon he did say my GB was heavily scarred so it needed to be removed. I also inquired about the upper right back pain which he replied is the result of a tendon that wraps around your side to your back that becomes irritated before and during surgery and it should heal in about a month or so. I never did have gallstones, my GB just stopped working. There is one thing that has worked as far as relieving the pain for me and that is xanex (anti-anxiety med). I take this medication for public speaking and flying. I have been anxious lately so I decided to take one and noticed the pain was gone. My mom is a doctor of parmacology and relayed to me that xanex is also used to treat muscle spasms. Has anyone had any similar experiences with their back after surgery?

Also, I must say that quite a few of these postings can really scare people. Everyone is different in terms of healing and what is considered normal is differnet for every person. We should remeber we all had MAJOR surgery and our bodies are still healing. I'm keeping a positive outlook and know that feeling better is just right around the corner!
