risks and benefits of tonsillectomy surgery?

Hello! My daughter’s doctor recommended tonsillectomy. She had more than six episodes of tonsillitis last year. Her tonsils are also enlarged. The doctor said that due to frequent and severe episodes of tonsillitis her general health was endangered. She has no other problems regarding her health. She is very active child. Some friends of mine say that tonsils shouldn’t be removed since they play an important role in the immune system. What are risk and benefits of tonsillectomy surgery?

Hello! Every surgery bears risk of bleeding and infection. There is also a risk related to anesthesia which includes allergic reactions and problems breathing. Sometime post-surgical bleedings can go unnoticed and cause serious problems. Also, there is a risk of injury to the uvula but this happens really rare. It is true that the tonsils are part of our immune system but we only benefit if they are healthy. If they cause frequent infections or obstruct breathing the surgery to remove them is of benefit.
