Hi, my daughter will have powered intracapsular tonsillectomy in two weeks. Her tonsils or adenoids will be removed, and but not completely. This method is called shaving, and I would like to know more about it.

Hello, I had tonsillitis and a doctor recommended me to remove my tonsils or adenoids. They used a microdebrider, a shaving device with a small rotating tip. This method is called shaving, and a surgeon removes 90% of the tonsils. It is less dangerous than total removing, because a layer of tonsil tissue is left to protect the throat. Tonsils or adenoids are there for a good reason-they protect our body from viruses and infections, by making antibodies. However, if your daughter has a recurrent or chronic tonsillitis, intracapsular method is not appropriate. It might happen that tonsils regrow or that infection appears again. Shaving of tonsils and adenoids causes bleeding, which is controlled by electrocautery.
