I recently was put on heprin at the hospital and am on coumadin 5mg now. I have developed red bumps all over my back and chest. The doctor at the hospital said they look like pimples. Some have a white tint to the top of them. They will not pop, but will start to bleed. Is this from the medicine or maybe from just being in the hospital for weeks??? I can't find any pictures of a side effect rash.

Do they look like pimples or red patches? It could be hives as well.

It is possible to develop rash like an allergic reaction to both of these drugs but I reckon that your doc should recognize the rash if it were. Did s/he have them checked? Are you still at the hospital?

It could be but it is not necessarily a drug reaction. It happens that a person develops itchy rashes for no special reason although they are on drugs.

It seems odd to me that these are pimples and that there are so many of them appearing suddenly?

Is it possible for you to be checked by a dermatologist instead of the doctor who thought these were pimples? They may not have as much experience as dermatologists.

I went from Heprin to Coumadin, from hospital to home. All the material I have read and researched has listed a 'rash' or 'hive-like' skin rash as a side effect of Coumadin. If your rash is bleeding, a dr. visit is in order. If he/she dismisses it as a general rash, you may want a second opinion. Bottom line-your showing a symptom you didn't have before going on this medication. Also, I developed and still have, a painful rash in and below my forehead hairline and at various areas at the nape of my neck. They itch, burn and bleed if picked at. (hard not to!) I've been cleaning the areas 2-4 times a day (premoistened toweletts-sp?) and that seems to help the burn/pain. Good Luck to you.

I too was in the hospital on heprin and now on coumadin, I did have a similar rash that started at the hospital and lasted abount 1 1/2 week after i got out. my doctor said there is no recorded allergies to coumadin and therefore thought it was from the heprin or something in the hospital he recomended Benedryl.

My son had heart surgery to replace a valve and never gained concesness after surgery.
They told me it was due to Heparin reaction HIT.
He lost circulation to his feet and hands.
It seems it took the DR 4 days to determine what was wrong with him.

never was taken off the ventalator.

I've found, from my experiences with coumidine and heprin, that somewhere in my systems, I start to "generate" poisions, that can't or don't find their way out thru normal channels i.e. sneezing, breathing, sweating, urinating, and that other one. These little "pimples" are poison pockets. With a sharp pair of cutical cissors, I "crack'em" open, wipe off the hardened "seed" and they rarely bleed and heal right away.
