Hi, I have developed some kind of rash that does not itch, but occasionally my skin breaks down forming painful lesions. I went to the doctor and he did some test with the infected tissue. The diagnose was skin sarcoidosis. I have never heard about this condition before. He prescribed me some cream for the lesions. The doctor was not very wordy about this condition. Can you tell me how could I have got it and what causes skin sarcoidosis?
Hi, sarcoidosis is a condition that affects usually the lungs, but other organs can be infected as well. The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown. It may be bacteria, virus or some kind of environmental toxin; the scientists have not figured it out yet. Therefore the source of the infection can not be determined. The diagnose is based on the existence of specific granulomas found in the affected tissue. The granulomas caused by skin sarcoidosis are different than the ones found in other similar conditions. There are different types of skin sarcoidosis. In one case the granulomas may be localized on the face, in the other on lower legs and in some cases arms can be affected as well. The lesions can sometimes be painful and leave scars. The treatment of skin sarcoidosis consists usually of the use of corticosteroid creams that are applied.
