I am a 51 year old, peri menopausal female who has been having strange sleep disturbances. At times I will wake up and feel like I've had an adrenaline surge. There are times when it is preceded by an intense tossing and turning period where I'm semi conscious and want desperately to get comfortable and sleep and then I'll wake and must get up and move around. Most of the time, I just wake up and feel like I'm about to jump out of my skin. I get up and walk around, sometimes I'll take tylenol, but I don't think it really makes a difference. Once I walk around for a few minutes, I can go back to sleep. It usually occurs 1 to 3 hours after I go to sleep. I've tried so many things. When it first occurred, my doctor told me to stop taking my armour thyroid medication. That didn't help. Then my doctor sent me to an endocrinologist who did some tests and told me that my glucose was borderline and wanted me to take a medication for pre diabetes. Instead I changed my diet and went on a low carb, low fat diet. I am athletic and watch my weight. I swim 3 times a week and eat well. The episodes went away for almost three years and returned a couple of months ago. I hate taking medications and really don't want to go back to a doctor. All they do is want to give me medications without really knowing what is wrong. Can anyone diagnose this for me and tell me what I need to do?
