smoldering infection in root canal and having surgery

I have an elective surgery scheduled. However, I am in the process of wait and see on a tooth that possibly has a failed root canal. My concern is having the surgery with a chance of a slight infection brewing around my tooth that has the root canal/crown.... Any suggestions on the effect it could have?
