something happened to my voice

Something is happening to my voice and I am not sure why. I think that is voice due to exposure to smoke in a bar. I am not a smoker, but I am often there. Is it possible?

Yes, this is what happened to me. After singing for six months at the bar I completely lost my voice, so I went to my doctor. He said my vocal fold, which needs to be moist to produce sound, were like pieces of charcoal. I told him about the type of conditions I worked. His advice was taking breaks outside in the fresh air but mostly don’t sing in smoky bars???
