Yes, that is true. It has been estimated that for 1-2% of RA patients, eating vegetables in the nightshade, or solanaceae family may cause arthritic flares. Nightshade family vegetables are tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, red and green peppers and paprika.
This is caused because nightshade foods results in a buildup of cholinesterase inhibiting glycoalkaloids and steroids…This may cause inflammation, muscle spasms, pain, and stiffness.
Some people feel difference within few hours they for example eat potatoes, other say that nightshade vegetables makes no difference for them. However, avoiding high protein intake is very recommendable.
