spotting after 15 days of period

i had my periods from 08/02/07 to 11/02/07 and on 28/02 i noticed spotting varying between pink and sometimes brown.
the same thing has been happening for the past few months now and i end up having my periods 5 to 6 days sfter this observation.
my cycle used to be longer before i started having sex, it used to be 40 days then it started getting shorter and now my cycle is of 3 weeks.
i am sexually active, have never used any pills for birth control.
i am not sure why this is happening.. any idea?
